After relocating multiple times, Hope moved into its permanent home at 1400 Kennerly Road in Irmo following groundbreaking in 2001. The congregation had grown from 45 to a thriving community.
Families began meeting for worship in homes and adopted the name "Hope Lutheran Church" through a fortunate mailing label error. They ordained their first pastor, John Guse, in 1972.
Hope celebrated its 50th anniversary as an established ministry with multiple worship services, expanded staff, and robust outreach programs sharing the sure hope of heaven with Columbia.
My wife Emily and I moved to Columbia in July 2024, after I completed my graduate studies at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. I'm originally from Tennessee and Emily grew up in Wisconsin, but we are thrilled to be here and to call South Carolina home. Emily and I love being outdoors, exploring new places, playing sports, cooking, and meeting new people. We're so excited to be a part of this community and to share the good news of Jesus here!
If you'd like to meet with me to learn more about our ministry at Hope or just to talk about Jesus, please send me an email (nate@hopeofcolumbia.com). I'd love to get to know you, hear your story, and share Jesus with you!

Staff Minister Andrew
I always wanted to help people. While teaching a Psychology course in college, I experienced the "aha" moment when someone understood what I was explaining - I knew then that I wanted to be a teacher. I attended Wisconsin Lutheran College from 2005-2010, graduating with degrees in Education and Broad Field Social Studies. Upon graduation, my wife Rachel and I moved to Lexington, SC. I've been a member of Hope Lutheran Church since 2005, serving as Youth Discipleship Elder, Teen Sunday School teacher, and in various other capacities. Through these experiences, I realized I loved serving the members and community of Hope. In June 2018, Hope extended a call to me to serve as its staff minister. I look forward to serving the members of Hope, our community, and most importantly God.
I enjoy sports, the outdoors, reading, and time with my family. My wife and I have three children and we have seen the Lord bless us and be with us every step of the journey. You can contact me at andrew@hopeofcolumbia.com.

Hope follows the Bible first and foremost. We find that the teachings of the Bible are correctly represented in the Lutheran Confessions. These documents were prepared in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation. Undeniably, life is not the same today as it was in Germany in the 1500s, but fortunately for all of us, God remains the same forever. The truths of grace and love and redemption and the practical wisdom for life that God has given us through his word are just as real and useful as they were when Christians 500 years ago sat down to summarize them so that God's people could see their God better.
Hope is one of over 1,200 churches that are part of the church body known as the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Our membership in the WELS unites like-minded Christians across our country and around the world who share a common faith to accomplish things that we could never do alone! We pool our resources to do mission work in the United States and abroad, to train people to serve in the public ministry (as pastors, teachers, and staff ministers) and to release Christian publications.
We share the sure hope of heaven through Jesus Christ—to transform hearts, equip homes, and reach our neighborhood.
HOPE FOR YOU
Hope is for everyone. Real hope doesn't come from your own efforts or anything you can do. It comes from hearing that God has made and kept his promises to you. We exist so that the sure hope of heaven in Jesus alone is shared in people and through people.
HOPE FOR YOUR HOME
When you gather around God's promises as a family, you'll discover that hope can change your home. We help parents pass on the sure hope of heaven in Jesus to their children through numerous kid-friendly programs & a worship setting that welcomes a little noise.
HOPE FOR OUR NEIGHBORS
This church isn't working unless it's reaching out. We exist so that the sure hope of heaven in Jesus is shared in and throughout greater Columbia: through volunteering, caring for neighbors, and community-building events.
We added you to the list. Keep an eye out for messages from Hope!
